Statistics – geographics

The FIBO Data Model has become a global phenomenon. Users from over a hundred countries downloaded FIB-DM Core, the open-source version. The geographics page shows the 4,529 download form submissions by region and lists of all 109 FIB-DM countries. We also explain the cleanup process and classification considerations from raw form data to pie.

Overview

The majority of FIB-DM downloads (1,126) come from the United States, Canada, and some Mexican banks. Europe is the second most significant region, with 918 downloads. London is a financial center, and the UK has the most downloads (246), followed by France (116), the Netherlands (83), and Sweden (80!). Surprisingly, there has not been as much uptake in Germany, given the size of the economy and that Frankfurt is the second-largest stock exchange in Europe. India dominates Asian downloads (216) – many consulting and software companies have headquarters on the subcontinent. Many Financial Institutions from the Gulf states and South East Asia show strong interest in the FIBO model. Japan (31) and Korea (4) are underwhelming, just like Germany in Europe.

Assignment to the Global category is arbitrary. The Big-4 accounting firms fall into this category, but multinational banks are allocated to their main country. The smaller regions, South America (91), Africa (137), and Australia + New Zealand (127), complete the regional breakdown.

Methodology

The pie chart’s background is the FIB-DM download form. Whenever a visitor solves the Google reCAPTCHA and clicks Submit, the website sends an email with the download links to the provided email address. The form raw data, retrieved on 10 August 2024, comprises the display fields and technical information.

We use the following steps to assign the country:

  1. If the email address has a Country code top-level domain, ccTLDs, that determines the country. E.g. @bank.br is Brazil.
  2. If the address is an office email, we look up the company’s headquarters or main business location. E.g. @bofa.com is Bank of America in the United States.
  3. We rely on the Company field for webmail provider addresses like @gmail.com, which is often inconclusive. Many downloads are from individuals, and the company field just states “for “personal use” or “self.” An abbreviation may indicate more than one company. Hence, the table below shows 1,196 downloads with the country Unknown, and the Region table has a total of only 3,333.
